Mohammad Ziad Al-A’rawas killed on July 24, 2014 on his 17th birthday. Mohammad was shot dead by Israeli forces as he marched with thousands of Palestinians from Al Am’ari, a refugee camp in Ramallah, to the Qalandiya checkpoint that bars free Palestinian passage to illegally annexed Jerusalem. He was a resident of Qalandiya refugee camp. News sources did not specify his hometown in Palestine.

According to Al-Jazeera: Local residents described the boy was a well-mannered teenager, who had been hoping to study hotel and restaurant management. “He even trained at a local restaurant after school hours,” said Mahmoud Awad, one of A’raj’s colleagues. “He had a bright future, and now he’s gone.”

May he rest in peace.

Two Palestinians were killed in clashes with security forces at the Qalandia checkpoint north of Jerusalem Thursday night, as part of an anti-Gaza operation protest that turned violent and saw over 10,000 Palestinians attend. Some 39 Palestinians were arrested.

Police said the Palestinians fired live rounds at them, and the al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades has claimed responsibility for the gunfire. The two Palestinians were identified as Mohammed al-Araj, 19, and Majad Suffian, 27.

Youths set off fireworks and threw stones at Israeli officers who responded by using crowd dispersal measures, and according to reports from the scene they also fired rubber bullets.

The Palestinians claim that five people have been wounded in the clashes so far.

Five policemen sustained light wounds from fireworks thrown during riots that broke out in Jerusalem’s Temple Mount and ten Arab youths were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the riots. Protestors also shot fireworks in the neighborhoods of Abu Tor and East Talpiot. In addition, riots were reported in the East Jerusalem area of Shuafat.

Hamas responded to the protests, calling them an “important development”. Hamas’ spokesman in Gaza said: “The West Bank is fighting. It is important these protests stand and spread across the West Bank”.

Security forces in the capital received reinforcement in the Old City on Thursday night in light of concerns that violent demonstrations would erupt on the occasion of Laylat Al-Qadr (Night of Destiny) celebrations, which marks the day the Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.

In the West Bank, more than 10,000 demonstrators from Ramallah gathered at Qalandia, a large military checkpoint that controls the entrance to Jerusalem, AFP reported.

Clashes broke out in a amid what AFP described as a “very tense atmosphere”, and six Palestinians were wounded by gunfire, Palestinian medical sources claimed.

NYT: Huge Protests In West Bank Over Israeli Offensive In Gaza

A Palestinian protester at the Qalandia checkpoint used a slingshot to hurl a stone at Israeli troops.

Trouble erupted Thursday night during a march at the Qalandia checkpoint that separates the West Bank town of Ramallah from Jerusalem. Thousands of marchers chanted, “With our soul and blood, we will redeem Gaza,” and clashes broke out between stone-throwing youths and Israeli security forces. One Palestinian teenager was killed and scores were wounded.

The funeral of the youth, Muhammad al-Araj, 17, drew thousands of mourners on Friday. His father, Ziad al-Araj, 41, a plasterer from the nearby Qalandia refugee camp, said that after seeing the bodies of women and children killed in Gaza on television, his son had told him that he wanted to join the fighters there. “He wrote in his phone, ‘I hope to be a martyr,’ ” Mr. Araj said.

At the road leading to Qalandia checkpoint, the earth was scorched and stones carpeted the road. A few dozen young boys gathered far from the checkpoint, throwing firecrackers. Israeli soldiers hurled teargas and stun grenades in response.

The Israeli military said troops had used “riot dispersal means” against protesters who threw stones and firebombs at them and blocked a road with burning tyres. A senior army official told the Israeli news webiste, Ynet, that Palestinians had “opened fire with Kalashnikov rifles from inside the protest” at the checkpoint.
