Palestinian killed during funeral clash in West Bank

10 April 2015

A Palestinian man has been shot dead in clashes with Israeli troops at the funeral of a militant in the southern West Bank, hospital officials say.

The victim was named by local media as 27-year-old Ziad Awad, a relative of the Islamic Jihad militant being buried, Jaafar Awad.

An Israeli military spokesperson said soldiers had opened fire after funeral-goers threw rocks and petrol bombs.

The clashes took place in the town of Beit Ummar, near Hebron.

A doctor at Hebron’s al-Ahli hospital told the Associated Press a man had died after being brought in with gunshot wounds.

Medical officials said several others had been hurt in clashes with Israeli troops.

According to an Israeli military spokesperson, soldiers had feared for their lives as protesters at the funeral threw rocks and petrol bombs and rolled burning car tyres at them.

The spokesperson said the soldiers responded with non-lethal “riot dispersal means” and then with 0.22-calibre “Ruger” bullets.

“Four hits were confirmed,” the spokesperson said, adding that the military was investigating reports of a fatality.

The funeral was for a Palestinian militant who had been recently imprisoned by Israel. He was reportedly released early because of ill health.

The clash comes two days after a Palestinian man stabbed two Israeli soldiers in the northern West Bank before being shot dead by one of them.

Palestinian man was killed and at least two others wounded on Friday after Israeli forces opened fire on missile-throwing protesters at the funeral of his cousin, a militant who died weeks after being released from prison.

Ziad Awad, 27, died after being shot in the back in the West Bank village of Beit Ummar, near Hebron, according to witnesses, who also claimed Israeli troops had used live fire to quell demonstrations.

He was attending the funeral of his cousin, Jaafar Awad, 22, a member of the Islamic Jihad militant group – who died earlier on Friday. Violent clashes erupted after mourners blamed Israel for the cousin’s death.

It was the second Palestinian death this week in the occupied West Bank, following the fatal shooting of 32-year-old man on Wednesday after he attacked two Israeli army paramedics with a knife, wounding one of them severely, as they sat in an ambulance near the Jewish settlement of Shiloh.

The latest shooting happened after mourners threw rocks and petrol bombs at soldiers, who responded with non-lethal “riot dispersal means” including tear gas, before resorting to small live calibre bullets, according to an army spokeswoman. The Israeli military said it was investigating the incident.

Feelings ran high at the dead militant’s funeral – which was attended by thousands of mourners – after his family and the Palestinian Authority (PA) said his death had been caused by medical negligence during his incarceration in a jail in Beersheba, in southern Israel.

Relatives said Jaafar had been given an injection before he release that left him weakened and suffering from acute pneumonia. Issa Qaraqe, the PA’s official in charge of prisoner affairs, supported their claims by issuing a statement declaring “Israel alone is responsible for his death” and demanding an international inquiry. The Israeli prison service has denied responsibility

Palestinian reportedly shot dead at funeral

Cousin of deceased former prisoner killed and at least two wounded in clashes during funeral, for ex-prisoner say Palestinians.

A Palestinian was killed and two were wounded in clashes with the IDF, Palestinian sources said Friday.

Ziad Awad, 30, died during riots that broke out at the funeral of Jafaar Awad, a close relative who was released from prison a few weeks ago because of a terminal illness and died on Thursday. Ziad Awad, the cousin of the deceased former prisoner, was shot in the back by IDF fire, according to the Palestinians.

Crowd at the funeral in Beit Omar

The funeral was held in the West Bank town of Beit Omar. Angry protests erupted, with mourners accusing Israel of responsibility for his death.

Thousands of people marched in the funeral procession in the village of Beit Ummar, and some pelted troops deployed nearby with stones, witnesses said.

Israeli soldiers retaliated by firing tear gas and rubber bullets before resorting to live rounds, the witnesses added.

The IDF spokeswoman said the soldiers at first used non-lethal “riot-dispersal means” but, with the Palestinians undeterred, resorted to shooting live small-caliber bullets. These were aimed at the lower body of the Palestinians targeted, she said, and soldiers had reported four hits. The Israeli army had heard of a Palestinian fatality in the incident and was investigating, she said.

The head of a Palestinian Authority body in charge of prisoner affairs, Issa Qaraqe, issued a statement alleging Jaafar Awad had died of “medical negligence” at the hands of Israeli prison authorities.

“Israel alone is responsible for his death,” Qaraqe said in the statement, and called for an international probe.

Jaafar’s father, Ibrahim Awad, told AFP before his son’s death that Israeli prison authorities had given the 23-year-old man “an injection that made him ill and totally weakened him.”

Israel’s Prisons Service denied this and said the militant had been freed from custody three months ago.

Israel jailed Jaafar Ibrahim over “terrorist activity” and “membership in the Islamic Jihad” Palestinian militant group — accusations denied by his family.

James Rawley, the United Nations’ Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East, issued a statement after the reported death, saying he was concerned about the tensions around the West Bank. He added that the UN is calling for a full investigation into security incidents.

AFP and Reuters contributed to this report.

A Palestinian man was killed and two others were injured following clashes with security forces during a funeral in the West Bank, Palestinian medical sources said Friday.

The 30-year-old victim was identified by medics as Ziad Awad.

The IDF said violent clashes erupted during the funeral procession and troops responded with riot-dispersal means.

The funeral, which took place in the village of Beit Ummar, just north of Hebron, was for a Palestinian man recently released from Israeli prison.

Medics said two other Palestinians were wounded when Israeli troops opened fire to quell protests that erupted after the burial of the man, who reportedly died shortly after leaving prison. Mourners accused Israel of being responsible for his death.

The Palestinian medics identified the man who was buried as a relative, Jaafar Awad, who fell ill before he was released from jail.

The IDF spokesperson’s office told the Times of Israel that the funeral, attended by some 700 Palestinians “deteriorated into violent confrontations with IDF troops, which are illegal.”

The IDF said protesters threw stones, Molotov cocktails, set tires alight and blocked roads. The military added that troops responded with riot dispersal means, including the use of rubber bullets.

“We identified four hits are are looking into reports that a Palestinian man was killed,” said the IDF.

Israel jailed Jaafar Ibrahim over “terrorist activity” and “membership in the Islamic Jihad” Palestinian terror group — accusations denied by his family.

In a separate incident unrelated to Ibrahim’s funeral, one man was injured by gunfire after demonstrators near the southern Gazan city of Khan Younis clashed with IDF troops along the border fence separating Israel from the Palestinian coastal enclave.

According to the IDF, security forces to break up a riot featuring dozens of demonstrators burning tires and throwing rocks. After repeatedly shooting in the air to ward off demonstrators moving towards the security fence, a decision was made for a sharpshooter to take a targeted shot towards one of the men’s lower extremities, lightly injuring him.
